The Best Restaurants in Newtown
Newtown eats on State Street, full stop. We went door to door and came back with an order.
All eight of these kitchens share State Street — park once and the whole list is in reach. Ours starts in a basement that has written a new menu every day since 1997, detours through a 1772 tavern named for the decade it refused to pour anything alcoholic, and climbs to a second-floor room where the distillers hired themselves a chef. That's the field; run the order differently if you like — dinner's on State Street either way.
Cafe Con Leche
Scratch-cooked Latin food out of a State Street basement since 1997, with a menu the kitchen rewrites every single day. Vegan crab cakes sit next to real fajitas, which is why the table that can never agree ends up here.
The Temperance House
Pouring since 1772, except for the 1840s stretch of nothing alcoholic that earned it the name — the bar runs 33 taps now, so consider that settled. The scratch kitchen leans Latin and European under colonial fireplaces where the painter Edward Hicks once turned up.
Isaac Newton's Bar & Restaurant
Twenty-two taps, fourteen in constant rotation, and some 150 bottles inside a State Street building older than the country. The menu is long enough to make it dinner, but after two decades as the town's beer headquarters, the Delirium Tremens on draft is still the reason you walk in.
Duck Sauce
Old-school Chinese-American with a Eurasian streak: prawns in walnut sauce, chicken lettuce wraps, and the boneless spare ribs people reorder on autopilot. It's BYOB, so grab a bottle on the walk over and settle in.
Triple Sun Spirits Co. - Newtown
A second-floor cocktail room where the bourbon, rye, and dark rum in your glass were distilled by the house. The chef-in-residence program — Matt Boffa at the moment — turns the menu over each season, so the plates keep pace with the whiskey.
Pat's Colonial Kitchen
Breakfast and lunch in the historic Whitehall Building since 1988, with homemade jam on every table and cannoli pancakes on the menu. The kitchen closes at 2, so the apple-cheese-and-sausage omelet is an argument for setting an alarm.
State Street Kitchen
Micha Kearney has run this daytime counter for more than 20 years, putting cheesesteaks and hoagies on the same menu as Korean cooking. It shuts by mid-afternoon, which makes it the ranking's designated lunch — plan accordingly.
Lovey Poke & Tea House
Build-your-own poke bowls and a bubble tea list that runs past 100 combinations, with the family working the counter themselves. The Taiwanese snacks are the quiet play — popcorn chicken and dumplings next to your milk tea.
