Eight bakeries worth a Saturday, one opens before the sun

The pastry case is the great equalizer out here. You find bakeries in strip-mall storefronts, in Ferry Market stalls, and on Main Street corners where the line forms before the case is even half full. These eight are worth building a morning around.

  • 260 Bridge Café

    Phoenixville

A working bakery and job-training program in one storefront: Partners Creating Community teaches young adults the trade while Green Lion Breads' sourdough goes out the door, and Heart Stone Pastry splits the space. "Fantastic coffee and pastries. Really cozy cute vibes," Kim says on Google.

  • A La Mousse

    Narberth

A French patisserie on Montgomery Ave, big on mousse cakes and macarons, with a glass case worth a look before you order. Open nine to seven, every day.

  • A Taste of Philly

    Glenside
Three golden-brown soft pretzels on a sheet of wax paper

A soft pretzel bakery on North Easton Road that opens early, with Philly-style twists and mini strips as the counter staples and nuggets sold by the 20, 50, or 100. "They have the best pretzels I've ever personally had," Jonathan says on Google.

  • Alice Bakery & Confectionary

    North Wales

A North Wales bakery with a pastry case that empties by Saturday afternoon. The cakes and confections come out of the Main Street kitchen, not off a truck, and 499 Google reviews back the claim. "Everything tastes homemade," Katelyn says on Google.

  • Alondra's Bakery Kennett Square

    Kennett Square

A Mexican bakery on W State Street in downtown Kennett Square, with a counter of sweet breads and pastries. "Alondra is amazing, plus my mom wouldn't stop raving about the donuts," Laura says on Google.

  • All You Knead

    Quakertown

A W Broad Street sourdough operation that takes orders through its Bakesy page rather than running a walk-in counter. Open Saturday mornings, seven to ten, and that's it. "The best sourdough bread I've ever had," Rick says on Google.

  • Annie B's Sweets

    New Hope
A row of tiny miniature fruit pies with lattice crusts on a wooden board

A stand inside the Ferry Market baking dessert in miniature: two-bite tarts and mini bundts on the same recipes Annie ran at her old Confections shop before it closed in 2010. Open weekends only, Saturday till 8 and Sunday till 7. "Annie B's is my dad's favorite source for sweets, particularly the apple crumb pie," Andrea says on Google.

  • Amy's Creative Cakes

    Quakertown

Custom wedding and all-occasion cakes out of Quakertown since 2006, with Best of Weddings nods from The Knot three years running. Everything is made to order, so call before you need the cake, not after. "The wedding cake was delicious and was exactly what I envisioned," Nicollette says on Google.
